Teen Volunteers, Prepares for Medical School
At the age of 15, Philip Ridgway began his volunteering experience at Share Medical Center.
“I volunteer to help my community and prepare myself for entering into the medical profession,” says Ridgway.
His goal is to go to medical school in Tulsa and become a family practice physician and then return to Alva to start a practice.
As one of SMC’s youngest volunteers, Ridgway is noticed by all.
“He is an amazing young man,” says Regina Wilson, director of nurses at SMC. “He is very mature and wise beyond his years.”
Ridgway volunteers on Saturday afternoons where his duties are centered around the nursing floor at the medical center. He assists with answering the phone, running errands, assembles and organizes charts, and helps visitors get to their destinations within the hospital.
“Philip is always willing to help out and do anything we need help with. He is very courteous and polite, and always has a smile on his face,” stated Wilson.
“I am quite attached to the patients and nurses that work on the floor. I will miss them and volunteering when I leave for Tulsa later this fall,” Ridgway says.
Ridgway recommends volunteering to anyone who feels the need to support their community. He feels it has been a wonderful learning experience for him and one of the most rewarding activities almost anyone can participate in here in Alva.
“The warm concern and sympathy from all the Share Medical Center staff at all hours of the day or night, is what makes SMC special,” quoted Ridgway.
Ridgway graduated high school this spring and plans to major in biochemistry then enter the pre-med program at the University of Tulsa beginning next fall. He enjoys playing racquetball and the piano. He has been playing the piano for more than 11 years and was taught by his grandmother, Alycen Yoder. His parents are Max and April Ridgway of Alva.
