Share Medical Center Continues Hospice Services
Amid some confusion regarding the recent sale of the Share Medical Center (SMC) Home Health agency, medical center leadership are explaining that the recent transaction does not include the sale of hospice services.
Regina Wilson, SMC Director of Nurses explained, "We want to make sure everyone knows that we will continue providing hospice care to area patients and families."
Hospice services, while often provided in the home, are not included in home health services. SMC CFO, Albert Wiss further clarified that the two services have different provider identification numbers. He further clarified that SMC will not experience any changes to the way it provides hospice services as a result of the home health sale.
Unlike home health, there are no other providers of hospice services to the Alva area. Further, the company that purchased the home health agency could not reach an agreement to purchase hospice along with it.
Alva Hospital Authority Chairman, Jason Gaisford remarked, "We don't want there to be a void in patient care with regard to hospice services, so we will continue to offer this important care to our community."
Hospice services are focused on caring for patients with terminal illness during their end of life experiences. Hospice care includes pain management, patient and family counseling, and a number of other services specifically geared toward the sensitive task of caring for those who are dying. Wilson adds, "We do whatever we can to help ensure a patient's experience is one of compassion and quality of life, despite the reality of the situation."
Hospice services are offered and aided in part thanks to volunteers and donations throughout the year. Annually, the SMC Foundation holds a fundraising and personal care item donation drive around Christmas time. There are a number of other opportunities throughout the year for supporters to make contributions to benefit the hospice program.
